Die Möwe Jonathan - Jonathan Livingston Seagull – illustrations by Susanne Dorendorff

It was because of Susanne Dorendorff’s handwriting style―and the charismatic, creative energy she unleashes and channels into all of her work―that Ullstein Publishers in 1987 decided to ask her to illustrate a special edition of the classic cult book Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

The book appeared in October 1989 and was in print until 2004 (a total of 9 printings). It is now a cherished collector’s item. The book contains 24 philographs, but we are only able to show a few of them on this site.

The Jonathan Livingston Seagull illustrations comprise the best-known early and complete philographic work to date. It is an ingenious example of human inventiveness―and a fascinating reflection of Susanne Dorendorff’s personality.

It goes without saying that all of the Jonathan Livingston Seagull illustrations shown on this site are not meant to serve as calligraphy models and may not be used as such.

The book illustrations (also available in poster size) may, however, be used for displaying purposes upon permission. Please contact us:
